Leather and Crafts

Hello Craft Lovers! Welcome to today’s blogpost. Today, I will be writing on Leather Craft. Before I go into writing about leathercraft proper, it is important I write on what leather is.

What is Leather?
Leather is a durable and flexible material created by tanning animal rawhide and skins. Leather is used to make clothing, footwear, book covers and wall hangings. It can also be used to create beautiful upholstering vehicles and furniture, and for making warrior and hunter bags, weapons, knife sheaths and canteens.

What is Leathercraft?
Leathercraft is the practice of making items from leather into craft objects or works of art, using shaping techniques, coloring techniques or both. Leather crafting involves the transformation of leather materials into a work of art. As with many crafts, there are a number of steps from the raw material – in this case a piece of leather – to a finished item.

Leather craft involves designing, cutting, and then, depending on the project, hole punching, sewing, and finishing. Additional steps could be decorating, carving and dyeing.

Different methods are used to create designs like stamping, dyeing and painting it. To stamp the leather, striking tools and dampening of the leather are required. Leather dyeing is done by applying pigments that seep into the pores of the material. Painting leather differs from dyeing.

Hair and Crafts

Hello Readers.
Welcome to today’s blog post. And today, I will be writing on Hair in relation to crafts.

Hair, like many other professions, has elements of crafts embedded in it. Hair styling is a major industry, that requires skill and dexterity. Just like craft, Hair Styling, Weaving, or Cutting deals with creativity and requires artistry.

https://instagram.com/afrikankrown

Hairstyle, hairdo, or haircut refers to the styling of hair, usually on the human scalp. Hair can be one of the most important features of a person’s appearance. It can change the appearance of our face, eyes and head and it is one of first things people notice about you. The fashioning of hair can be considered an aspect of personal grooming, fashion, and cosmetics, although practical, cultural, and popular considerations also influence some hairstyles.

Hairstyling as a craft encompasses all the elements of dressing the human scalp. A key feature of Hair styling as a craft is that it involves high degree of “hands-on” craftsmanship. Throughout times, people have worn their hair in a wide variety of styles, largely determined by the fashions of the culture they live in.

Hair weaving is the most popular way of changing your hairstyle nowadays. It refers to the techniques employed for incorporating new hair, either natural or synthetic to the existing hair of an individual. It also refers to the process of adding hair – human or synthetic – to the scalp of the individual.

https://instagram.com/hairadvocate

Haircuts are a type of hairstyles where the hair has been cut shorter than before, these cuts themselves can be further modified with other hairstyles.

Hair is also being used by artists to depict their creative art.

Paper Craft Explained.

Welcome Readers!

Today on the blog, I will be writing about paper craft.

Paper Craft is the most common type of craft but this does not mean that it requires any less artistic skill. Paper craft is the most loved and ventured into because paper is a relatively inexpensive medium, readily available, and easier to work with than the more complicated media typically used in the creation of three-dimensional artwork, such as ceramics, wood, and metals. Also, it is neater to work with than paints, dyes, and other coloring materials.
Let’s take a look at the definition of Paper craft.

According to Wikipedia, Paper craft is a collection of crafts using paper or card as the primary artistic medium for the creation of one, two or three-dimensional objects. Paper and card stock lend themselves to a wide range of techniques and can be folded, curved, bent, cut, glued, molded, stitched, or layered.

Paper craft is the collection of art forms employing paper or card as the primary artistic medium. We have different types of papercraft, but today I will be writing on three areas: Origami, Bookbinding, Box, and Paper Mache

Origami picture from Canva

Origami: Origami is an ancient technique developed in Japan where squares of paper are intricately folded and formed into various objects such as flowers, animals, and boxes. One of the requirements of traditional origami is that no glue, pencil marks or cuts are used to make the finished product. To be considered authentic origami, the final project must be produced solely from folds.

Bookbinding: Unlike majority believe, Bookbinding is also a form of the papercraft. Bookmaking is the making of a book from paper pages bound together under a hardcover. Crafters often will create their books in conjunction with scrapbooking or journaling.

Box Making: Box making is a form of papercraft. Boxes are commonly used across many industries including the jewellery, cosmetics, perfume and fashion sectors.

Papier Mache: The first experience people often have with papier mache is as an art project in elementary school, but don’t let that fool you. Surprisingly sophisticated sculpture and art can be produced with papier mache. The art of papier mache consists of strips of paper dipped in glue or a compound of paper mash applied to an armature. After the mache dries, the object is painted to add color and pattern.

Crafts: An Overview

When the word ‘craft’ is mentioned, majority thinks it deals with only paper craft but I will have you know that craft goes far and wide beyond paper. It is a skill that requires manual dexterity and artistic penchant. In today’s post, you will be enlightened on what craft really is and the common types of crafts.

What is Craft?
The term ‘craft’ denotes a skill, usually employed in branches of the decorative arts (e.g ceramics) or in associated artistic practice (e.g lace-making). Craft is an occupation or avocation that requires special and artistry skill. A key feature of crafts is that they involve high degree of “hands-on” craftsmanship rather than just skill with machine.
According to Wikipedia, crafts as a whole can be described based on two forms:
Art form: Crafts as an art form is an outlet of human expression, usually influenced by culture and which in turn help to change culture. Crafts are a physical manifestation of the internal creative impulse.
Visual art: Crafts as a visual arts form include painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking and others, that focus on the creation of works which are primarily visual in nature.
Crafting includes a variety of art forms, from sculpture and metalwork to knitting and printing. Common types of crafts includes: Ceramic and Glass Crafts, Fiber and Textile Crafts, Flower Crafts, Leatherwork, House ware, Fashion, Needlework, Paper Crafts, Wood and Furniture Crafts, Stone Crafts, Metal Crafts.

It is basically a myth that crafts are only for children. It will be worthwhile to know that crafts are not only for children rather they are for all age group –so long as the person has the penchant for it. Crafts cuts across all fields of human endeavours.

Types of Crafts
Like arts, crafts deals with beauty and creativity. Crafts can be divided into five basic types based on their form and purpose. We have the textile, decorative, paper, functional, and fashion crafts.

Textile craft: This includes any type of craft where you work with fabric, yarn or surface design. Some examples are knitting, quilting, appliqué, weaving, and dyeing. Many of these could obviously also fall into the decorative or fashion categories since the finished goods are often sold as sweaters or wall hangings. However, they are technically textile crafts since they all start with fabric.

Paper craft: As the name implies, paper crafts have to do with paper. It includes papier-mâché, boxing, collage, calligraphy, paper making and origami paper folding.

Decorative craft: Furniture making, metalwork, stenciling, stained glass, gilding, sponge ware, and basketry all fall into the category of decorative crafts. This category also includes toy-making and other arts. Combining furniture making with metalwork is a popular trend.

Fashion craft: This craft encompasses all the elements of dressing the human body: jewelry, hats, leatherwork (shoes, belts, handbags), and garments. It naturally intersects with other craft types since jewelry can be made through metalworking and garments are fabricated by sewing –which can be classified as textile craft. Fashion involves a variety of materials from soft fabrics such as cotton, linen, and wool to sturdier materials such as nylon, canvas, and leather.

Functional craft: Many of the other types of crafts can also be classified as functional. For example, decorative pottery –including serving platters and utensils – is often made with components that are okay for people to eat from. Many furniture crafts are primarily functional but can also be quite decorative.
